Corporate fellowship program helps retiring Army recruiter launch his civilian career at Comcast. HIRED HERO Civilian Job: Recruiter 2, Staffing, Comcast, West Division, Centennial, Colo. Age: 47 Robert M. Burns PARALLEL UNIVERSES. Turns out there are a lot of parallels between recruiting for the Army and recruiting for Comcast. "As an Army recruiter, we discussed the benefits and opportuni- ties afforded to young men and women who decide to serve in the United States Army and help them through the process of enlistment," says Robert Burns, a former Army recruiter who recruits retail managers for Comcast's West Division in Colo- rado. "Similarly, as a professional recruiter, we discuss the oppor- tunities afforded them with the company and potential for growth and development." TIME TO GO. During his service, Burns earned a college degree and an MBA – one of the primary reasons he enlisted. After more than 30 years, Burns knew it was time to hang up his boots. He started prepping two years out by calling a family meeting to decide where to go. They opted to stay in Colorado so his three teen- aged children could finish high school there. Childhood hero? Burns was chosen to participate in the Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fel- lowship Program at Fort Carson, working with a newly formed professional recruiting team at the Comcast West Division HQ in Denver for 12 weeks. That led to his full-time position. NETWORKING WORKS. "The networking aspect of the job search is what worked best for me. When interviewing for the fellow- ship program, I was introduced to someone from Comcast who shared my résumé with the direc- tor of recruiting, and from that exchange I was offered the oppor- tunity to fellow with the team."
