76 G.I. JOBS | FEBRUARY 2017 | GIJOBS.COM Age: 44 Military Service: Master Sergeant (E-7), Air Force (1991-2011) AFSC: Pavements and Construction Equipment Superintendent (3E291) Education: • Associate degree, construction technology, Community College of the Air Force, 2014 • CDL License – Southwest Truck Driving School, 2004 Roehl Transport Apprenticeship Program, 2015 DENNIS RELLINS What is your typical day like? I usually get up before the sun does, get my coffee, check my truck out. I check my cargo securement. I check the weather, routes and traffic so that I get to my destination on time. I then hit the road. I stop along the way to check my truck and freight. When I get to my destination, I get unloaded and get ready for my next load to do it all again. How did you get your job? I did my research online and used my GI Bill to go to CDL school. I knew about Roehl and saw a presentation from one of their driver employment specialists. What's the coolest thing about your job? All the different places I go to. I've seen enough of the world, now I'm trying to see my country. What's the biggest challenge? The work itself is not challenging. I don't see it as a job – it's something I like doing. The hardest part is balancing work with time at home. Best advice for transiঞoning service members? Becoming a civilian truck driver is worth looking into – it's a lot more enjoyable than I thought it would be.
