34 G.I. JOBS | JUNE 2017 | GIJOBS.COM SERGEANT What do you do? Communication is a key factor in my job; it's normally done via radio, but also by phone and face to face. I communicate with the yardmaster, dispatcher or trainmaster to receive/verify proper instructions to safely get a train from Point A to Point B. I work in all types of weather and walk on ballast the majority of my shift. I switch cars, couple and uncouple, make minor field repairs, prepare paperwork, call signals, copy track warrants, apply and release hand brakes, and check and test train brakes. Why did you enlist? I enlisted in the military because I needed direction and guidance. I was 19 when I joined the military, had just graduated high school and didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. I lived in a small town that didn't have a TARSHA STUBBS Conductor, Norfolk Southern* Age: 39 Military Service: Sergeant (E-5), Army (1996-2004) MOS: Unit Supply Specialist (92Y) Education: Associate degree, Columbus Technical College, 2007 lot of job opportunities, so I thought the military would give me a chance to broaden my horizon and learn some useful skills that would help me through life while doing something meaningful and patriotic. How long before separaঞon did you begin your job search? I was somewhat of a procrastinator, so I didn't start my search until about a month prior to my terminal leave. I was on terminal leave for about 30 days. So I started about two months before being officially released from the military. What worked best in your job search? Getting tips on résumé writing worked best with my job search, with the understanding that your résumé needs to be written properly to reflect you and your skills. *Employer is a paid advertiser in this issue.
