20 G.I. JOBS | SEPTEMBER 2017 | GIJOBS.COM What do you do? I lead our Verizon military recruitment team, which helps service members and military spouses with employment opportunities and mentorship. How did you get your job? Through the power of networking! I always had the utmost respect for Vietnam veterans and would go out of my way to thank them for their service. One day, I thanked a veteran who happened to have a family member who worked at Verizon, and it led to this job opportunity. Ultimately, I had applied to over 200 jobs across New Jersey in my job search and was invited to only one interview. What was the most difficult part of transiঞoning into civilian life and how did you navigate it? Before I was hired, it was a challenge to get prospective employers to realize the value of translating my military experience into the corporate world. Once I was hired into this position, I quickly understood the challenges. Hiring decisions are based on set processes and skill sets. Service members bring a unique background to the workplace. Once leadership can understand how those special skills can benefit the business, it's a win-win scenario. FIRST SERGEANT TOMMY JONES Leader of Military Programs, Verizon * , New York City Age: 43 Military Service: First Sergeant (E-8), Army (1993-2013) MOS: Signal Support Systems Specialist (25U) Education: • Bachelor's degree, organizational management, Ashford University, 2012 • Internetwork Engineering Certification, PCAGE Career Institute, 2013 • Master Certificate in Human Resources Certification, Villanova University, 2016 • Master Certificate in Project Management Certification, Villanova University, 2017 What was the hardest interview question you were asked? Believe it or not, the most difficult question to answer was, "Tell me about your experience." I had such a vast amount of experience and narrowing it down to what they wanted to hear was extremely difficult. SUCCESS *Company is a paid advertiser in this issue.
