34 G.I. JOBS | SEPTEMBER 2017 | GIJOBS.COM FIRST LIEUTENANT DIETRICH HENCKEL Ag Services Operations Manager Trainee, Archer Daniels Midland, St. Paul, Minn. Age: 25 Military Service: First Lieutenant (O-2), Army National Guard (2014-Present) MOS: Aviation Officer (15A), UH60 Blackhawk Pilot Education: • Bachelor's degree, agricultural engineering technology, University of Wisconsin River Falls, 2014 • ROTC, commissioned as a second lieutenant, 2014 SUCCESS AGRICULTURE TRANSITION What's the biggest challenge? As a National Guard member, the biggest challenge is balancing my military duties and responsibilities with my civilian job demands, while also having time for family. When on active orders you only have one "employer" that you have to answer to and adjust your schedule around. What do you do? I oversee the execution of day-to-day operations at a barge loading facility located on the upper Mississippi River. I am responsible for safety, regulation compliance, maintenance, grain handling and employee management. The facility receives inbound corn, soybeans and wheat by truck or rail and loads it out by barge, rail and truck. How many interviews did you do with your current employer? I did two interviews prior to the military in 2010 with ADM when I did an internship with them. When I was still on active orders, I did one interview with ADM to get hired on full time. How specifically did you relate your military experience to the job you were applying for? Leadership and teamwork: The military teaches people to lead and how to follow the leadership of others in order to work as a team. This skill correlates closely with civilian jobs. The military trains its leaders to be adaptive and adjust fire to accomplish the mission. What makes your job something you'd recommend to a friend who's transiঞoning out of the military? ADM has been very Military Friendly ® to me throughout my employment with them. They have gone out of their way to ensure I have time for monthly drills, annual training and AFTPs (military training flights) that I conduct on a weekly basis to maintain military readiness.
