I am in the Bexar County Sheriff 's Academy, training to become a detention officer. Why did you pick this job? Great culture and excellent benefits. What military skills do you apply to your civilian job? Leadership, physical and mental toughness, adaptability. What surprised you about the civilian workforce? You actually get paid more for overtime and having a degree. Definitely different from Army life. What's the coolest thing about your job? I get to work with the potential to have an impact on someone's life. Best piece of advice for transiāĻžoning service members? Don't put off your transition for anything! Start networking early and always do research on the organizations you are applying for. What do you do? As a patrol trooper, I investigate motor vehicle crashes and criminal incidents. Why did you pick this job? I wanted to be a police officer since I was a young child. What military skills do you apply to your civilian job? Leadership, people skills, paperwork, honor, integrity and selfless service. Any funny incidents during your first days on the job? When we spoke to an instructor at the academy, we had to state our name and rank. I was so used to introducing myself as Sgt. Arndt that I stood up and said that. I stumbled a few times till I got to Cadet Arndt. Best piece of advice for transiāĻžoning service members? If going from active duty, transition to the reserves and apply for whatever civilian career you have your heart set on. Have faith in your training and what you can accomplish.
