6 G.I. JOBS | NOVEMBER 2018 | GIJOBS.COM EVERY ISSUE MONTHLY MUSTER DEAR READERS: If the thought of driving a desk when you get out of the military fills you with dread or makes you yawn, this is a good time to consider construction. Contractors hired 297,000 workers between August 2017 and August 2018, the most recent month for which data was available. Moreover, hourly earnings in the industry averaged $29.95 in August. Despite boosting wages, employers in construction are having a hard time filling hourly craft positions. Many are willing to pay new hires to learn a trade. That's the case with Joe Carmo- dy, who appears on this month's cover. He was a joint fire support specialist in the Army, and like many service members, he was stressed by the prospect of transi- tioning to the civilian workforce. "I was scared, I didn't know what else I was going to do," he told a G.I. Jobs' writer for the cover story, which begins on page 8. In April 2018, he was hired by Performance Contractors, which is paying for Carmody to get certified as a pipefitter. His MOS had nothing to do with building – in fact, he was trained to destroy things – but now Carmody is on track to become a skilled tradesman whose expertise is in high demand. In this issue we explore two other career fields where employers are recruiting from the military. Insurance is one of them, and not all insurance jobs are desk jobs. On page 28, you'll find a Q&A with Luke Nardone, a Guardsman who travels many miles each day to assess the damage of Progressive Insurance customers' vehicles. We also offer insight on careers with state and local governments, and pick the brains of post-9/11 veterans working for the Pennsyl- vania State Police, Cincinnati Police Department and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro). You'll find information on the hottest jobs in all three sectors. Be sure to visit GIJobs.com for more resources to help you deter- mine your post-military path. Thanks for serving.
