So it probably doesn't surprise you that veterans are well-represented in the construction industry, a burgeoning field in which everyone has a hand in building, shaping and creating. CAREERS BUILT FOR VETS With a pride of workmanship that's second to none, veterans in the construction field take great care to ensure that every board is precisely placed, every wire carefully inspected, and every blueprint strictly followed. Working under tight deadlines? No sweat! Dealing with challenging conditions, such as in cramped spaces or up on ladders? Pfft! No problem, obviously. The fact is, veterans are perfect candidates for careers in construction. And industry recruiters have taken notice. "Individuals leave the U.S. military with skills and personal qualities that make them ideally suited for our industry," says David Theriot, Military Workforce Development for Performance Contractors. "They are loyal, teamwork- driven, goal-oriented, easily trainable candidates who can work safely and accurately under pressure." GROWTH INDUSTRY What's more, the construction industry is growing—and it's growing fast. Construction added 297,000 jobs in the 12 months between August 2017 and August 2018, according to a survey released by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). Employers are having a hard time finding qualified workers, despite increasing wages.
