44 G.I. JOBS | SEPTEMBER 2017 | GIJOBS.COM WHEN JOHN BUSH JR. retired from the Army in 2008 after 20 years of service, he want- ed to continue to serve. Already armed with a bachelor's degree in human services and counseling, Bush found what he was looking for at Dismas Charities, a not- for-profit company that operates residential re-entry centers across the country. The centers help men and women return to society from state and federal prisons. "My inspiration was service. I spent 20 years serving my country and wanted to continue working in a field of service," he says. Bush, 47, works full time as a substance abuse counselor. He's also earning a master's degree in counseling and human develop- ment with a specialization in men- tal health counseling from Lindsey Wilson College*. He attends classes online and at the college's campus in Radcliff, Ky. We asked Bush to share his thoughts on his military and edu- cational journey. What was your MOS? Bush: I enlisted as a 19K M1A1 Armor crewman, and after being promoted to the rank of E-6 and moving to Fort Knox in 2001, I became a basic training instructor with the Armor Center. My job was to train soldiers on M1A1 job- related skills. I performed these duties from 2001 to 2005 and again after returning from Korea in 2006 until retirement in August of 2008. Former Army armor instructor continues his education so he can continue his service. EDU STUDENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT STUDYING TO SERVE GIJOBS.COM G.I.
